Time to Refinish Your Deck?
Is it time to refinish your deck? Are you overwhelmed with the task ahead?
From strippers to cleaners to sealers and stains, it is important to
understand the correct "system of steps" to make your efforts as easy as
possible with the results that you will be proud of for years to come. The type
of wood, desired look and the amount of protection your deck needs will
determine what your course of action will be. The guidelines below will assist
you with repair, preparation, application, coverage and maintenance:
Visual Inspection
· Determine the condition of the wood. Check for splitting, cracking or
warping boards and replace.
· Inspect for dark random spots, which indicate mold or mildew growth
and remove with an appropriate mildew cleaner.
· If wood is stained or painted check for peeling or flaking and remove
with a chemical remover or by sanding
· Look for raised nails. Countersink if necessary.
Color Preference
· Choose from a variety of finishes – natural, wood-toned, semi-
transparent, semi-opaque or solid color stain.
· The color and condition of the wood will affect the final finish that is
selected.
Application
· Each product requires the proper surface preparation and application
to ensure a long-lasting finish. Ignoring or failing to do proper preparation
may result in a shorter than expected life of the finish being applied.
· Apply products as recommended on label instructions. The amount of
material used will depend on the type of finish and the porosity of the wood.
· Batch all products together to ensure a uniform finish. Stir all products
on a regular basis to ensure color consistency and complete mixing of all
ingredients in the can.
Maintenance
· Durability depends on the product itself and the climatic conditions to
which the surface is exposed.
· If the surface has greatly deteriorated or is a different finish than what
is now desired, remove the coating completely and follow all cleaning and
rinsing instructions.
· Refer to label instructions to determine if the surface is in good
condition and ready to receive the finish coat.
Understanding and following these correct steps when refinishing your deck
will result in reduced maintenance costs, less labor and most important,
longer life and enjoyment of your deck!
